The San Felipe del Morro Castle, also known as Castillo San Felipe del Morro or El Morro, is a 500-year-old castle located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Situated on a rocky promontory at the entrance of the San Juan bay, it offers some of the most remarkable views of the city and its harbour. The construction of this fortress started in 1539 and it has successfully defended San Juan from multiple attacks including 19 sieges by foreign forces. El Morro has 6 levels, including watchtowers, barracks, storehouses, and magazines for ammunition. It is open for guided tours and visitors can still find some original cannons from the 16th century. A unique feature of El Morro is the “Garita del Diablo”, an half-moon shaped alcove located at the top of the fortress' walls, which served as an observation post. There is a beautiful beach situated close to the castle, as well as a light house and plenty of restrooms, snack bars and souvenir shops.
