📍 From Galleria Umberto I, Italy
Teatro di San Carlo stands beside Naples’ Royal Palace, close to Piazza del Plebiscito, at the heart of the city’s former Bourbon court district. Inaugurated in 1737 under King Charles of Bourbon, it predates both La Scala and La Fenice and remains one of Europe’s oldest active opera houses. Rebuilt after a fire in 1816, its celebrated horseshoe-shaped auditorium is defined by six tiers of boxes, deep red upholstery, gilded ornament, a prominent royal box and a richly painted ceiling. The strong symmetry and repeating curves of the balconies give interior photographs a striking sense of depth and scale, while the restrained exterior offers little hint of the opulence within. Interior access is tied to performances or scheduled visits.
