San Candido, known as Innichen in German, is a small South Tyrolean town in the upper Puster Valley, close to the Austrian border and framed by the northern Dolomites. Its bilingual identity reflects the meeting of Italian and Tyrolean cultures, visible in street signs, architecture, and everyday life. The historic center gathers around the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Saints Candidus and Corbinian, whose solid stone mass and bell tower contrast with pastel façades and the more ornate Church of St. Michael nearby. From the compact streets, mountain ridges rise abruptly behind tiled roofs, creating recognizable layered compositions; winter snow sharpens these contrasts, while summer brings flower-filled balconies and green slopes. The Drava, which begins near San Candido before flowing east toward the Danube, also places the town within a wider Alpine geography.
