📍 Thailand
Sam Phan Bok Viewpoint overlooks the Mekong’s eroded sandstone riverbed in Lao Ngam, Pho Sai district, Ubon Ratchathani, where the river marks Thailand’s border with Laos. The name means “three thousand holes,” referring to the many potholes and basins carved into the rock by river currents carrying sand and sediment. Falling water levels in the dry season expose broad stone platforms, revealing rounded hollows, narrow channels, and sculpted edges that are largely concealed when the river rises. From above, the contrast between the Mekong and the textured rock makes the landscape’s scale clear; closer views emphasize the repeating curves and pools of water held within the sandstone.
