Salzburger Dom, Salzburg’s cathedral, anchors the historic Altstadt between Domplatz and Residenzplatz, reflecting the power of the city’s former prince-archbishops. Dedicated to Saints Rupert and Virgil, the present early Baroque building was completed in the 17th century; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptized here in 1756. Its pale stone façade, twin towers and copper-clad dome form one of Salzburg’s defining silhouettes, while the interior is marked by luminous stuccowork, ceiling frescoes and strong architectural symmetry. From Domplatz, the façade provides a monumental backdrop, especially when framed with the square’s Marian column; the square also becomes the stage for the Salzburg Festival’s traditional performances of “Jedermann.”
