📍 United States
The Salt Lake City and County Building stands in Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City, where it remains a seat of municipal government. Completed in 1894, it is a prominent example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, with rough-faced sandstone, deep rounded arches, and richly carved ornament. Its central clock tower is crowned by Columbia, a female personification of the United States. The building also served as Utah’s state capitol from statehood in 1896 until the present Capitol opened in 1916, giving it significance beyond city affairs. Washington Square’s broad lawns provide space to take in the building’s scale and tower, while closer views emphasize the contrast between rugged masonry and intricate sculptural details.
