📍 From Les Grands-Chemins Trail, Switzerland
Saint Théodule Church is a picturesque 8th Century Romanesque-style building located in the city of Gruyères in the Swiss Canton of Fribourg. It is part of the so-called "Castra Grueriena" which is the ensemble of buildings located at the crest of the hill on which the city is built. It is thought to be the second oldest church in the Canton and it is the only one of its type in the area, having preserved its original characteristics uninterrupted by later extensions.

The nave of the church is divided into three parts with a semicircular apse. It features a porch on the south side and two distinctive towers of different heights near the entrance. Inside, the most remarkable feature is the frescoes covering the pillars and walls, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Théodule, who was a local bishop of the 4th Century and had a great influence on the development of the city. Visitors will be amazed by the beauty of this 8th Century building and its historical importance, with a wonderful view of the entire Gruyères area from the top of the hill. The best place to learn more about it is the Musée Gruérien right next door.
