Saint Ritha Church Heliopolis
๐Ÿ“ Egypt
Built at the end of the 13th century, Saint Ritha Church Heliopolis is a remarkable relic of religious art in the El-Bostan district of Cairo, Egypt. It is dedicated to Saint Ritha, a Coptic Orthodox Christian saint who is said to have accompanied the Holy Family during their flight from Bethlehem. The exterior of the church is an unusual, elongated, rectangular shape and is built with colorful, patterned stones with red and white stripes. The interior features magnificent Stone and Coptic frescos, still visible despite being badly damaged due to vandalism and decay. Other highlights include the richly decorated pronaos and capitals with biblical cursive images and a crypt beneath the altar. Today, Saint Ritha Church is a symbol of religious unity and is open to both Christians and non-Christians alike.
