Saint Michael’s Castle, also called Mikhailovsky Castle or Engineers’ Castle, is an intriguing royal residence built for Emperor Paul I between 1797 and 1801. Surrounded by water channels, the fortress-like palace features a distinct, irregular layout and richly decorated interiors, reflecting its defensive purpose and the emperor’s innovative tastes. Tragically, Paul I was assassinated here only 40 days after moving in, leaving the castle steeped in mystery and fascination. Today, it is part of the State Russian Museum complex, where visitors can admire art exhibitions, explore restored chambers, and learn about the building’s tumultuous history. Located near the Field of Mars and the Summer Garden, it’s easily accessible by foot from major city landmarks, making it a captivating stop for history buffs and architectural enthusiasts alike.
