The Saint John Monastery is a fortified Greek Orthodox monastery located on the island of Patmos in the Dodecanese. The monastery was built in the 11th century by Saint John the Theologian and was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. The monastery is home to several ancient churches and chapels, each distinct in their own masonry and decoration. A notable feature within the monastery is the legendary Grotto of the Apocalypse, where Saint John received the Revelation from God as written in the book of Revelation. The surrounding walls were built in the 16th century and feature a watch tower, numerous defensive structures and a unique parapet walk. Inside the walls are restored chapels and a museum with numerous artifacts including frescos, icons and religious manuscripts. Visiting the Saint John Monastery is an unforgettable experience full of history and spirituality.
