Saint-John Church, known locally as the Sint-Janskerk, stands in Gouda’s historic center close to the Markt. At about 123 meters long, this Gothic church is the longest in the Netherlands, but its defining feature is the Goudse Glazen: monumental stained-glass windows, many dating from the 16th century. Biblical narratives, heraldry, and portraits of donors turn the glazing into a record of religious life and powerful patrons. Originally Catholic, the church became Protestant during the Reformation while retaining its stained glass. The long nave and rows of columns create a strong sense of depth, while closer views reveal the windows’ intricate storytelling and saturated colors against the restrained interior.
