📍 Morocco
Jemaa el-Fnaa is the great public square at the heart of Marrakech’s medina, opening between the souks and the nearby Koutoubia Mosque. Long a meeting place for trade and popular entertainment, its cultural space is recognized by UNESCO for living traditions that include storytelling, music and public performance. The scene changes dramatically toward evening, when rows of food stalls appear and cooking smoke softens the lights, crowds and silhouettes of the Koutoubia minaret. Elevated café terraces reveal the square’s scale and constant movement, while ground level offers dense layers of vendors, performers and diners. When photographing performers or portrait subjects, ask permission and clarify any expected payment first.
