📍 Armenia
Saghmosavank is an Armenian monastic complex located in the village of Saghmosavan. It stands on the edge of a deep gorge cut by the Kasagh river, offering impressive views. It includes the remnants of a 13th-century church and a half-ruined gavit (entrance hall), believed to have been built in 1215. A library, refectory, and scriptorium were added in 1275-1295. The complex is renowned for its 17th century khachkars (cross-stones), outstanding examples of Medieval Armenian stonecutting art. The exterior walls are adorned with carved decorations featuring floral motifs, heraldic symbols and inscriptions. A small chapel dedicated to the Holy Mother of God is built on a cliff nearby. Saghmosavank strikes the visitors with its elaborate carvings and tranquil atmosphere.
