Sacred Heart Cathedral is Sarajevo’s main Roman Catholic church and the largest cathedral in Bosnia and Herzegovina, notable as a focal point of the city’s multi-confessional urban fabric. Erected during the Austro-Hungarian era (1884–1889) to serve the Catholic community, it symbolizes both religious identity and the late-19th-century modernization of Sarajevo.
Designed by architect Josip Vancaš in a neo-Gothic style, the cathedral features a red-brick façade, a prominent rose window, and twin spires rising approximately 43 meters that give the skyline a vertical accent. Inside are vaulted ribs, stained-glass windows, richly carved altars, and polychrome detailing blending Gothic motifs with local artisanship. The crypt contains the tombs of several bishops and notable clerics, reflecting its diocesan importance. Uniquely, the cathedral sits prominently across from Sarajevo’s Ottoman-era mosque quarter, making it a visible reminder of the city’s layered religious history. It serves not only liturgical functions but also cultural ones—regular organ recitals and sacred music concerts are part of its contemporary life—while major diocesan celebrations center on the Feast of the Sacred Heart.
