📍 France
The Ruines de Bordeaux are the surviving remains of the Palais Gallien, a Roman amphitheatre in the western part of central Bordeaux. Built when the city was known as Burdigala, it is one of the clearest visible traces of Bordeaux’s Gallo-Roman past; despite its later name, the structure was an arena rather than a palace. Tall brick-and-stone arches, fragments of the outer walls, and exposed masonry now rise among residential streets, creating a striking contrast between ancient engineering and the modern city. The most recognizable compositions use the repeating arches to frame nearby façades or emphasize the warm, weathered textures of the Roman fabric.
