Rua Reidh Light House is located at the most westerly point of mainland Scotland, overlooking the Outer Hebrides. The lighthouse has been the beacon of assurance to the thousands of vessels who, since the 1900s, have sailed past the treacherous waters of the Flannan Isles area since the 1800s. It is said that the views of the cliffs and coastline are so picturesque that some ships stopped intentionally to take advantage of its beauty. Today, visitors can climb the 242 steps to the top of the lighthouse and gaze out over the rocky cliffs or explore the area on foot. Visitors may also have the chance to see the lighthouse keeper's bothy which offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of those who had to live and work in such an isolated location.
