The Royal Monastery of Brou is the most impressive structure in the French town of Bourg-en-Bresse. Located within the Parc de l'Est, the expansive complex was built between 1503 and 1559 by Margaret of Austria, who wanted to honor her late husband, Philibert le Beau. The monastery is a brilliant example of Renaissance architecture and features a grand courtyard, chapels, a refectory, a cloister, and a belfry. It is best known for the art and sculptures by Conrad Meit and the stained glass windows by Jean de Rety. Today, the monastery is a popular tourist destination and a glimpse of what the Renaissance period was like in France. Visitors can attend concerts and events hosted at the monastery, or take part of the guided tours available in the summer months. The monastery is definitely a must-see for history buffs and art lovers.
