The Rotunda of Thessaloniki, also known as the Church of Agios Georgios, is an immense cylindrical structure built by Roman Emperor Galerius in the early 4th century AD, initially intended as his mausoleum. It stands as one of the oldest monuments in the city. The building's robust masonry and massive dome, 30 meters high, bear similarities to Rome's Pantheon. While the interior once featured opulent mosaics, today visitors can still admire intricate mosaic fragments depicting various religious figures. The site offers an ambiance that merges Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences. Ideal for photographers seeking historic architecture, the Rotunda's expansive interior and the panoramic views from the dome's base are particularly striking.
