The Rotunda in Voronezh is the preserved ruin of the former regional hospital, destroyed during the fierce fighting for the city in 1942–43. Left unrestored as a war memorial, its circular core, exposed columns, fractured brickwork and skeletal concrete frame convey the scale of Voronezh’s wartime devastation more directly than a reconstructed monument could. The open structure creates stark patterns of arches, voids and weathered textures, especially when low light cuts through the shell. As a protected memorial and fragile ruin, it is intended to be viewed from outside its enclosure.
