Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a compact, medieval walled town in Bavaria perched above the Tauber valley, its skyline defined by stepped gables, timber-framed façades and church spires. Its visual interest comes from exceptionally intact late-medieval streetscapes: narrow, cobbled lanes, painted half-timber houses, defensive walls and gate towers that read like a stage set for historic urban life. Photographers favor the Plönlein intersection for its converging perspective and symmetrical pair of façades framing a narrow lane, and the town walls and Burgtor for panoramic compositions of red roofs and the valley beyond. Wet cobbles and low light bring out timber textures and color saturation; snow or morning fog heighten the town’s atmospheric depth. The historic core is primarily pedestrian.
