Roman Aqueduct
📍 Israel
Caesarea’s Roman aqueduct stands beside the Mediterranean just north of the ancient harbor city, where a surviving line of stone arches crosses the sand at Aqueduct Beach. The system carried fresh water from springs near the southern slopes of Mount Carmel, using a gentle gradient to supply Caesarea Maritima, the port developed by Herod the Great. Later additions, including a parallel channel, reflect the city’s growing demand for water under Roman rule. The exposed arcade makes the engineering easy to read: an elevated watercourse supported by repeated arches across low coastal ground. Pale, weathered masonry frames the sea and sky, while views along the beach reveal the structure’s long, low silhouette.
