Roman Amphitheater of Lecce
📍 Italy
The Roman Amphitheater of Lecce is the buried ring of an ancient arena revealed at the heart of Piazza Sant’Oronzo in Lecce, a visible footprint of the city’s Roman past when it was known as Lupiae. Large curved sections of seating and the elliptical outline are exposed at street level, their pale local limestone contrasting with the surrounding Baroque façades. Photographically, the site is defined by that curve cutting through the regular geometry of the square and by details of weathered masonry, tool marks and inserted later stones that tell a layered urban story. The amphitheater’s low profile and proximity to the column of Sant’Oronzo make it best captured from the piazza edges to show scale and the dialogue between ancient ruin and living city.
