Rome, Italy’s capital, spreads across the Tiber in Lazio, with an urban landscape shaped by ancient Roman power, the papacy, and centuries of rebuilding. The Colosseum and Roman Forum anchor the ancient city, while Renaissance palaces and Baroque churches and fountains define many of its squares. Piazza Navona preserves the elongated footprint of an ancient stadium, a clear example of how later Rome grew around earlier structures. Travertine monuments, ochre façades, cobbled lanes, and terracotta roofs give the city a recognizable palette and texture. Along the Tiber, stone bridges and embankments frame the river; across it, Trastevere’s narrow streets reveal a more intimate scale. The dome of St. Peter’s Basilica rises from Vatican City, the independent state surrounded by Rome, and remains a defining feature of the skyline.
