The Rofangebirge rises east of Lake Achensee, forming the rugged mountain backdrop to Achenkirch at the lake’s northern end. Part of Tyrol’s Brandenberg Alps, the compact limestone range is defined by steep rock faces, high plateaus and summits such as Hochiss and Rofanspitze. From Achenkirch, the contrast between pale crags, dark conifer forest and the blue-green water gives the landscape its distinctive scale, while changing cloud and snow conditions continually reshape the skyline. Trails enter the range from the Achensee area, with broader high-level access also available from Maurach farther south.
