📍 France
Rising above Vitrolles’ old village north of Marseille, the Rocher de Vitrolles is a limestone outcrop overlooking the Étang de Berre, a large coastal lagoon. Its summit carries the square medieval Tour Sarrasine and the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Vie, landmarks that give this rocky plateau its recognizable silhouette. The pinkish, ochre-toned cliffs form a striking contrast with the clustered houses below. Seen from the old village, the rock creates a dramatic backdrop to narrow streets and tiled roofs; from the summit, the view extends across the lagoon and the urban and industrial landscape surrounding its shores.
