Robin Hood's Bay
📍 United Kingdom
Robin Hood’s Bay is a former fishing village on Yorkshire’s North Sea coast, just south of Whitby and within the North York Moors National Park. Stone cottages and red-tiled roofs crowd the steep hillside, linked by narrow lanes and passages that descend towards the shore. The village’s maritime history includes a thriving 18th-century smuggling trade, closely associated with this compact network of streets. It is also the eastern endpoint of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk, which begins at St Bees in Cumbria. Views from the upper village reveal the layered rooftops against the sea, while the lanes below frame glimpses of water between cottage walls. At low tide, the shoreline opens into broad rock shelves and pools beneath cliffs, adding strong horizontal textures to the scene and exposing the fossil-bearing rocks of this Jurassic coast.
