At El Porvenir, the Río Usumacinta belongs to the great river system linking Guatemala’s Petén lowlands with southeastern Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. Formed upstream by the Pasión and Salinas rivers, the Usumacinta has long served as a route through the Maya region, whose ancient cities developed along its basin and tributaries. Here, the recognizable scene is the broad, sediment-colored current bordered by dense tropical vegetation, with small boats emphasizing the river’s scale. Water levels and flow change markedly with the rainy season, altering exposed banks, reflections, and the balance between river and forest in photographs.
