Karnak is the remains of an ancient temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River near Luxor, in Upper Egypt. The temple complex covers an area of about 200 acres and is the largest ancient religious site still standing. The ruins of Karnak are a remnant of the capital of the ancient Egyptian Empire, Thebes. It was once dedicated to Amun, the chief deity of the Theban Triad, and other gods of the pantheon. The columns, obelisks and walls of the temple complex have been the backdrop of many remarkable scenes and events throughout history. The Temple of Amon is the most popular, containing the now-famous Hypostyle Hall with its huge, decorated pillars. Other structures of interest in the complex include the Temple of Mut, the Sacred Lake, the Sacred Avenue and the Chapels of Osiris, Sekhmet and Ptah. Visitors can also explore the accompanying Luxor and Karnak Museums and the Mummification Museum. There is so much to discover and enjoy at Karnak, it’s a must-see for anyone visiting Egypt.
