Rio Merced is a river located in Yosemite Valley, California. The Merced River is an important feature of Yosemite National Park and is featured prominently in many of its photographic vistas. It is 280 miles long, beginning high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and exiting into the San Joaquin Valley. Rio Merced is known for its panoramic views, cascading waterfalls, deep canyons and turbulent rapids. The whitewater of Rio Merced is also popular for whitewater kayaking and tubing. There are scenic overlooks and hiking trails along the length of the river, many of which offer riverside camping. The Merced River Trail follows the course of the river, a total of 15.5 miles, and is one of the best ways to experience the full beauty and diversity of Yosemite Valley.
