Rifle Gap Reservoir lies several miles north of Rifle in western Colorado, within Rifle Gap State Park. Impounded by Rifle Gap Dam on East Rifle Creek, it fills a narrow valley framed by dry, sagebrush-covered hills and pale rock. The contrast between blue water and semiarid slopes defines the scene; in calm weather, the surrounding ridges reflect across the surface, while fluctuating water levels expose textured bands along the shoreline. The reservoir is used for boating, fishing, camping, and shoreline recreation, with access managed under Colorado state park regulations.
