Ribeira Grande, Cabo Verde, is located on the north-west coast of the island of Santiago, the largest and most populous of the Cape Verde archipelago. It is a vibrant coastal city and the capital of the municipality of Ribeira Grande. The cosmopolitan feel of the city is due to its long established cultural and historical links to Brazil, Portugal and the former Portuguese Empire. This makes Ribeira Grande an exciting place to visit for visitors interested in learning more about the country's vibrant past. Of particular note is the 18th century-style Fort of São Filipe, located on the edge of the town, and the 16th century Praça dos Restauradores, a cobblestone square surrounded by a picturesque little church, a lively marketplace, cafes and lively restaurants. Ribeira Grande is also an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding areas, including beaches like Achada do Jardim and Cruzinha and two other beautiful little towns called Vacolândia and Magnaviz.
