📍 Ukraine
The Residence of the Metropolitans of Bukovyna and Dalmatia stands in Chernivtsi’s university quarter and now forms the principal campus of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. Designed by Czech architect Josef Hlávka and built between 1864 and 1882, the complex reflects Chernivtsi’s Habsburg-era role as a multicultural regional capital and former seat of the Orthodox metropolitanate. Its eclectic architecture blends Byzantine, Gothic and Moorish influences through monumental red-brick façades, patterned masonry, arched galleries and steep roofs covered in vivid geometric tiles. Enclosed courtyards provide strong symmetry and layered views of towers, rooflines and arcades, while mature gardens soften the imposing scale. The ensemble has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.
