The Residenz Würzburg is the late Baroque palace built as the seat of the prince-bishops, occupying a prominent block beside Residenzplatz in the heart of Würzburg. Its importance lies in the scale and richness of its interior decoration and its celebrated ceiling frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, which crown the sweeping imperial staircase and create a theatrical, cloud-filled illusionistic space. Externally the long, symmetrical façades, articulated corner pavilions and formal Court Garden present classic Baroque axial planning; photographic highlights include the staircase’s strong converging lines and painted trompe-l’œil, the ornate stucco and gilded ornament close up, and courtyard views that frame the palace’s rhythm of windows and pilasters. Guided tours regulate indoor access.
