The Würzburg Residence stands on the eastern edge of the city centre, an 18th-century palace built for Würzburg’s prince-bishops and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Designed principally by Balthasar Neumann, it combines a broad Baroque façade and ceremonial forecourt with richly decorated interiors. The sweeping staircase rises beneath Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s fresco depicting the four continents; nearby, the Imperial Hall layers painted scenes with intricate stucco. Outside, the Hofgarten’s clipped hedges and terraces create a geometric counterpoint to the palace’s grand scale.
