Reserva Nacional Islas Ballestas is located in southwest Peru and is made up of three small islands in the Pacific. The area is known for its large, green guano mountains which are inhabited by an incredible variety of birds and animals and has been a protected national reserve since 1975. Visitors will find stunning cliffs rising up from the ocean, and a breeding ground for blue-footed boobies, sea lions, seals, penguins and other species found in the Humboldt Current. Boat tours are available to take you for close-up views of the area, as visitors can't venture out onto the islands. The reserve itself is managed by the local Mama Kosay communities.24
