Reserva de la Biósfera Los Petenes extends along the Gulf coast of Campeche, southwest of Celestún; it is distinct from the neighboring Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve in Yucatán. Its name refers to petenes, forested islands rising from seasonally flooded marshes and sustained by freshwater springs within the coastal wetland. This unusual mosaic brings mangroves, palms, grasslands, and denser woodland into close contact, creating vital habitat for waterbirds and other wildlife. From the waterways, the reserve is recognized by layered green vegetation, exposed mangrove roots, broad skies, and calm reflections that emphasize the flat, water-shaped landscape.
