Remagen
📍 Germany
Remagen is a Rhine town in Rhineland-Palatinate, south of Bonn, with roots in the Roman settlement of Rigomagus. Its best-known landmark is the surviving pair of dark stone towers from the Ludendorff Bridge, captured by American forces in March 1945 and remembered as the “Bridge at Remagen”; the bridge itself collapsed soon afterward. Above the town, the neo-Gothic Apollinaris Church forms a distinctive silhouette among wooded slopes, while the riverside promenade opens views across the Rhine to Erpel and the basalt cliff of the Erpeler Ley. Photographs from the waterfront can combine passing ships, long reflections and the steep valley landscape, with the bridge towers adding a stark historical counterpoint to the otherwise peaceful scene.
