Hoan Kiem Lake (also known as Ho Guom Lake) is located in the heart of buzzing Hanoi city in Vietnam. It is a popular recreational area for locals and tourists alike. With a surface area of over 12 hectare, this stunning lake is embraced by lush trees and quaint pagoda temples.
The main attraction of the lake is the tortoise tower. The tower is a small, 3-storey, green-colored pagoda sitting atop of a small island, connected to the banks of the lake by a beautiful red-painted wooden bridge. The belief is that, when Emperor Le Thai To reigned his kingdom, he used to have a tortoise companion, which he allegedly found in Hoan Kiem Lake. The lake is also the place where locals practice egg-balancing – a centuries-old tradition where they place eggs in boats to honor their ancestors. This custom is usually held on the 15th day of the first lunar month of the year, in the Lake´s southern half. A walk around the lake makes for a lovely morning or evening, and offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings. From the birdsong at dawn, to musician buskers at night, the peaceful atmosphere creates a tranquil escape from the busy main streets.
