Rawhiti Cave lies in the limestone hills above Motupipi, near Tākaka in Golden Bay. Its vast entrance opens like a natural amphitheatre, crowded with stalactites, stalagmites and unusual phytokarst formations shaped partly by mosses and other photosynthetic life. Some deposits angle toward the daylight rather than hanging vertically, giving the cave mouth its distinctive, almost animated texture. The contrast between sunlit vegetation, shadowed rock and pale calcite is especially striking from the viewing area, where the scale of the cavern becomes clear. Access is via a marked track that crosses farmland before climbing steeply through native bush; visitors should remain on the designated route and platform to avoid damaging the cave’s fragile formations.
