📍 From Inside, Iceland
Raufarhólshellir is a lava tunnel beneath the Leitahraun lava field in Ölfus, southwest Iceland, near the Þrengsli mountain pass. It formed more than 5,000 years ago when the surface of a lava flow solidified while molten rock continued moving below, leaving a long subterranean passage. Collapsed sections of the roof create natural skylights, where daylight picks out rust-red, ochre, and black lava textures; in winter, snow and ice often collect beneath the openings, adding sharp tonal contrast. Walkways and lighting reveal the tunnel’s scale without obscuring its rough walls and layered formations. Access is by guided tour, both for safety and to protect the fragile cave environment.
