Rana Ashutosh Pratap Singh Ghat is one of the stepped river landings in Varanasi’s long chain of ghats along the Ganges. Named for Rana Ashutosh Pratap Singh, it belongs to the distinctive riverfront where stone stairs connect the dense historic city with the sacred water below. Its photographic character comes from the layered geometry of steps, weathered masonry, moored wooden boats and everyday riverside activity. From the water, the ghat reads as part of Varanasi’s continuous façade of terraces, shrines and closely packed buildings; from the steps, the broad river and open eastern bank create a striking contrast with the crowded city behind.
