📍 United States
Rainbow Falls, or Waiānuenue, drops about 80 feet along the Wailuku River in Hilo on Hawaiʻi Island, just inland from the city center. The river spills over a dark lava ledge into a wide pool, with dense tropical vegetation framing the scene and a large cave recessed behind the water; in Hawaiian tradition, this cave is associated with Hina, mother of the demigod Māui. The English name refers to rainbows that form in the spray when sunlight reaches the falls, especially in morning light. Rainfall strongly changes its appearance, from separate white ribbons to a broad, forceful curtain. A developed overlook in Wailuku River State Park provides the recognizable frontal view, while nearby banyan roots and volcanic rock add texture to wider compositions.
