📍 From Inside, Peru
Qorikancha, whose Quechua name means “golden enclosure,” was one of the Inca Empire’s most important religious complexes, dedicated above all to Inti, the sun god, in the heart of Cusco. Gold sheets once covered its interior walls, expressing the sanctuary’s sacred and imperial significance. After the Spanish conquest, the church and convent of Santo Domingo were built over the temple, leaving Inca foundations and sections of finely fitted stonework visible beneath colonial architecture. This layering defines the site’s visual character: smooth, dark stone blocks with exceptionally tight joints contrast with pale walls, arcades and a bell tower. Outside, the sweeping curved Inca wall overlooking the gardens reveals the precision and scale of the original structure.
