📍 Iraq
Erbil Citadel crowns a raised settlement mound in the heart of Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. The mound was built up through successive layers of human occupation over thousands of years, making its height part of the city’s archaeological history rather than simply a defensive feature. Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2014, the citadel preserves a historic urban landscape of traditional houses and narrow lanes. Its fortress-like perimeter is formed largely by adjoining house façades, creating a nearly continuous wall above the sloping mound. From the square below, this elevated, earthen-toned skyline stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding modern city. The Qaysari Bazaar at the citadel’s foot adds another layer of context: an active market beneath the old settlement, connecting Erbil’s monumental landmark with its everyday commercial life.
