📍 From Front, Egypt
Qaitbay Citadel stands at the western entrance to Alexandria’s Eastern Harbour, in Al Gomrok, on the promontory of the former island of Pharos. Built in the 15th century for the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay, the coastal fortress occupies the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which was destroyed by earthquakes. Its square central keep, rounded corner towers and crenellated walls give it a distinctive silhouette against the Mediterranean. Pale stonework, deep-set openings and thick defensive walls reveal an architecture shaped by the need to guard the city’s maritime approaches. Views across the harbour connect the citadel with fishing boats and Alexandria’s curving waterfront, while its seaward side presents a starker composition of fortress walls, rocks and open water.
