📍 From Courtyard, Egypt
Qaitbay Citadel is a late-15th-century coastal fortress in Alexandria’s Al Gomrok district, standing at the western entrance to the Eastern Harbour. Commissioned by the Mamluk sultan Qaitbay, it occupies the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which was destroyed by earthquakes. Its position reflects the harbour’s long strategic importance, linking ancient maritime history with the city’s medieval defences. The pale stone, square central keep, rounded corner towers and crenellated walls form a distinctive silhouette against the Mediterranean. Harbour-side views place the fortress within a broader scene of fishing boats and Alexandria’s curving waterfront, while closer compositions emphasize the masonry, vaulted passages and contrast between solid defensive walls and open sea.
