📍 Bhutan
Punakha Dzong is a fortress-monastery at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital. Founded in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it served as Bhutan’s seat of government and remains the winter residence of the country’s central monastic body. Massive whitewashed walls, dark timber galleries, and gilded roof details give the complex both defensive weight and ceremonial richness. A covered wooden bridge across the Mo Chhu forms its distinctive approach, while views from the surrounding riverbanks reveal how the dzong occupies the meeting point of the two rivers. In spring, flowering jacaranda trees bring violet blossoms into striking contrast with the white walls.
