The Pula Arena, located in Pula, Croatia, is a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater, dating back to the 1st century AD. It is one of the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world and the only one with all four side towers entirely preserved. Constructed from local limestone, the arena is elliptical in shape, with a grand facade featuring two levels of 72 arches and a seating capacity that once accommodated up to 23,000 spectators. Historically, it hosted gladiatorial contests and now serves as a venue for various cultural events, including the Pula Film Festival. Visitors can explore the underground passages, which once housed wild beasts and gladiators, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient Roman entertainment.
