Puerta y Puente Levadizo is an iconic symbol of Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay. It is a key architectural monument, built in 1745 and it's still in use. The Puerta is the gate, located at the entrance of the old walled city, while the Puente is the drawbridge over the river. The Puerta was originally built as a defensive barrier to enter the old town. It is characterized by its warm colour palette, with the orange gateway and cobblestone street. The PUente is the most distinctive feature, a wooden bridge which could be raised or lowered to secure or restrict access to the city. It's a great place to visit for a glimpse of the city's history, and for a beautiful view of the river lined by manicured trees.
