Puerta de Santiago
📍 Spain
Puerta de Santiago is the historic gateway into Melilla la Vieja, the fortified old town occupying a rocky peninsula above the Mediterranean. Built in the 16th century as part of the first defensive enclosure, it is approached across the Foso de Santiago, the moat that helped isolate the citadel from attack. Its heavy stone arch, imperial coat of arms and compact defensive forms convey the military character of a frontier city shaped by centuries of contact between Iberia and North Africa. In photographs, the bridge creates a strong leading line toward the shadowed entrance, while the pale masonry, weathered surfaces and deep recesses emphasize the gate’s depth and solidity.
